Project Category: Ideation, Gamification, Game Design

What we delivered

The objective was to design a game-based e-learning experience for Telstra staff working in the Defence Engagement Business Unit. This gamification solution would effectively engage and onboard the target demographic and educate, motivate and engage users to familiarise themselves with additional security requirements for working with the Department of Defence and protecting confidential and private information.

The aim was to promote understanding and retention of knowledge surrounding security consciousness in the workplace especially for new starters who may not have prior experience working in a security conscious environment.

Our Approach

We developed the concept of players taking the role of a security expert monitoring operatives in the field, listening for security breaches, to train them on what security aspects they should be particularly conscious of. We designed game feedback mechanisms and gameplay scenarios to encourage positive behaviours and knowledge retention though a series of increasingly difficult missions to clear, with progress monitoring, ratings and awards, and the ability to replay missions to get a perfect score.

The Outcome

The final game was delivered as a desktop application, which formed part of the internal training process for Telstra staff that would be engaging with the Department of Defence. The new training was able to successfully enliven factual security training material through the application of gamification, and delivered tangible results by improving retention and engagement for new hires by ten times over non-game based training.
